Master Class Information

The Southeast Horn Workshop welcomes horn students from all levels (high school through graduate school, and adult amateurs) to play in two different master classes at the 2013 Southeast Horn Workshop.

Richard Todd will be presenting a solo horn master class which will focus on literature for solo horn (accompanied and otherwise). Performers in this master class may perform portions of any solo unaccompanied work, or may choose from the following works with accompaniment (performers may bring their own accompanist. A staff accompanist can be provided free of charge):

  • Ludwig van Beethoven. Sonata, Op. 17, mvt. 1.
  • Paul Dukas. Villanelle.
  • W.A. Mozart. Concerto No. 3, K. 447, mvt. 1.
  • Robert Schumann. Adagio and Allegro.
  • Franz Strauss. Nocturno, Op. 7.
  • Richard Strauss. Concerto No. 1, mvt. 1.

Annamia Larsson will present a master class focused on orchestral horn section excerpts. Each group of section performers in this master class must all represent a single academic institution and be registered for courses at that institution as of March 8, 2013. Participants may perform one or two of the following orchestral horn section excerpts in their allotted time during the class:

J.S. Bach. Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, Trio II.
Horns 1 & 2
Ludwig van Beethoven. Symphony No. 3 “Eroica,” mvt. 3.
Horns 1–3
Ludwig van Beethoven. Symphony No. 8, mvt. 3, trio.
Horns 1 & 2
Gustav Mahler. Symphony No. 1, mvt. 1 or 4.
Horns 1–4 (and 5–7 if possible)
Gioachino Rossini. Overture to Semiramide.
Horns 1–4
Dmitri Shostakovich. Symphony No. 5, mvt. 1 or 2.
Horns 1–4
Richard Strauss. Till Eulenspiegel.
Horns 1–4
Richard Strauss. Ein Heldenleben.
Horns 1–4 (and 5–8 if possible)

Interested persons must submit the following for application:

  1. A paragraph describing why you want to play in a master class.
  2. A brief letter of recommendation from your private teacher.
  3. An mp3 digital recording featuring a recent performance by the participant(s).

E-mail these items along with contact information and names of additional section members (if applicable) to Patrick Smith.

Complete applications must be received by February 1, 2013. Applicants selected to play will be notified by shortly thereafter. For consideration, all master class applicants must be registered to attend the workshop.
