Menus for Various Tastes
Depending on your role in the horn playing community or your specific interests, the events you choose to attend may vary. We offer these suggestions:
High School Horn Day
A special selection of workshop events for the one-day high school visitor. You’ll have a chance to work on your own playing in a special master class, attend a few concerts, and perform in a special workshop horn choir in Legacy Hall. Students may also enter the high school solo competition in conjunction with this event (see Competitions). Your $25 fee (payable as pre-registration or on-site) not only allows you entry into all events on Saturday, February 16, but you may also bring a parent, guardian, or band director along with you. In addition, you’ll receive with your registration a workshop T-shirt. (Please note that there must be at least one adult per five students attending.) Master classes for other brass instruments will coincide with the horn session as CSU Brass Day, so your non-horn playing friends can register and attend as well.
College Students
There is always plenty to do at the Southeast Workshop for college students. As always, there are plenty of competitions, horn choir performances, and great exhibits. But there are also a few events that you might like to take note of:
The BBQ
Okay, we admit it; it’s not just for college students. But this BBQ hosted by the CSU horn studio is a great place for college students to mingle. Purchase your tickets through pre-registration or on-site at the registration table; tickets might not be available at the door!
Workshops for Music Educators
Two workshops events are sponsored by the CSU chapter of CMENC, and are meant as reinforcement for upcoming music educators as well as refreshers for current teachers. The workshop on instrument maintenance and repair (Sunday) and the refresher for band directors (Saturday) are especially for you.
Collegiate Honors Choir
An event that appears from time to time at the Southeast Workshop, this ensemble will consist of students nominated by their teachers. The group will rehearse a few times throughout the workshop and perform in the Final Gala concert on Sunday February 17.
Study Abroad Seminar
A chance to discover relevant college study abroad programs that can fit into the busy course schedules of music majors. Ellie Jenkins hosts this session. If you have ever wanted to get college credit for traveling abroad, come to this session and find out how!
Adult Amateurs
The adult amateurs in the Southeast Region have been an important part of our workshop for many years. In recognition and appreciation, there are several events planned with you in mind.
Amateurs’ Luncheon
A box lunch provides a chance to eat and chat.
Horn Quartets
One of the most looked-for events of workshops is the chance to play through quartets with old and new friends. There are several opportunities for doing so: especially Saturday at 11:15, and in a larger setting with the mass horn choir at 5:00. The Schwob School of Music will remain open until hours posted in the schedule to allow more time for after-hours quartetting.
Forgotten Horn Gems
With music going in and out of print constantly, it’s hard enough to keep up with music that’s currently available. This session gives us the chance to remember and even hear gems of the repertoire that, for whatever reason, have faded from recital programs. This interactive session will allow plenty of playing and discussion. If you have a forgotten gem that you’d like to play, discuss, or have played at this session, please email Kristen Hansen with the information.
College Professors and Horn Professionals
(not meant as mutually exclusive terms...)
Your kind assistance is requested with the following items! Please email Kristen Hansen if you have any input on what follows:
Artists’ Ensemble
This horn ensemble is made up of any interested professionals; it’s currently scheduled to rehearse a couple of times during the workshop, and will perform on the Final gala concert on Sunday February 17. Needed are those interested in playing, someone interested in coordinating, and repertoire suggestions.
Professors’ Breakfast
The planning for future workshops will occur on Sunday morning, February 17 in the Conference Room at the Rivercenter. Breakfast (and coffee, lots of coffee!) is provided.
Regional Artists’ Recitals
Any interested professionals who would like to perform a solo or chamber work on one of the scheduled recitals should contact Kristen Hansen. Tentatively, one of the recitals will feature those new to the area, or in new positions. Pianists will be available by prior arrangement. In the interests of time, we regret to ask that performers use single movements only, and aim under the twelve-minute mark.
Collegiate Honors Choir
Those with college studios may nominate one of their students to perform in this horn choir. The group will rehearse a few times (scheduled) during the workshop, and will perform on the Final Gala concert.
College Horn Choirs
College horn choirs are warmly invited to perform. Please plan on emailing program information to Kristen Hansen by December 20 to ensure that everyone gets a spot who wants one. Please try to limit your groups to under the twelve-minute mark, as the number of choirs is always growing!
Other Events
There are several sessions on various topics tentatively planned and in the schedule. If you have a special interest in any of them either as a facilitator or as a participant, please don’t hesitate to email. Please note especially the “Forgotten Horn Gems” session, where we aim to re-discover, hear, and discuss old recital repertoire now out of print. If anyone would like to loan material or to perform in this event, you’d be welcome. Likewise the “Favorite Etude Show and Tell” is a chance to vaunt any of your particular favorites; you would be welcome to perform or to bring a student to perform.
Your collegial suggestions and advice are always warmly appreciated; please don’t hesitate.
