Travel and Lodging Information
Most of the activities for the 2005 Southeast Horn Workshop will take place in the new Music Complex on the campus of the North Carolina School of the Arts. Most of the performances will be in the beautiful new Watson Chamber Music Hall. NCSA Dining Services has a cafeteria as well as a snack bar in the newly-renovated Student Commons Building.
Winstom-Salem is a short shuttle trip away for those wishing to travel by air and an easy drive for those who wish to travel by car. We have reserved special rates at several local motels and hotels for your convenience. Please note the information about parking on campus and the additional information provided by the NCSA Visitors’ Center.
Travel by Air
The closest airports to Winston-Salem are Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO), a 25-minute drive away; the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT), a 75 minute drive; and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), a 90 minute drive. Do not fly to the Winston-Salem Airport unless you are flying in a private plane. The Convention and Vistors Bureau will make an inexpensive shuttle service available. Some hotels also provide free shuttle service.
Travel by Car
The North Carolina School of the Arts is located at 1533 South Main Street, Winston-Salem, about a mile south of Old Salem, a national tourist attraction. The School is accessible by Interstate 40 (which connects to Interstates 77, 85 and 95 in North Carolina) and US-52, and is 20 minutes away from Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro.
Driving from the East (Greensboro, Raleigh, Richmond)
- Travel on I-40 West taking the I-40 Bypass (not Business 40) towards Winston-Salem and Statesville (a left merge).
- In Winston-Salem, take exit 193C to Main Street, proceeding to the stop light.
- Turn right at the light onto Silas Creek Parkway, then turn left onto Main Street.
- Follow Main Street about a mile and turn right into the school’s main entrance.
Driving from the West (Asheville, Knoxville)
- Travel on I-40 East taking the I-40 Bypass (not Business 40) towards Greensboro (a right merge).
- Continue on I-40 approximately 4.5 miles and take exit 192 to Peters Creek Parkway.
- Turn left onto Peters Creek Parkway and the next right onto Silas Creek Parkway.
- Proceed on Silas Creek Parkway, then turn left on Main Street.
- Follow Main Street about a mile and turn right into the school’s main entrance.
From the South (Charlotte, Columbia, Atlanta)
- Take exit 87 from I-85 onto US-52 North and travel 24 miles to Winston-Salem.
- Take the Sprague Street exit, turning left onto Sprague Street.
- At the second traffic light, turn right onto Main Street.
- Follow Main Street one-half mile and turn right into the school’s main entrance.
Driving from the North (Charleston, WV)
- Take exit 101 from I-77 onto I-74 East. After 12 miles, I-74 becomes US-52. Follow US-52 South about 30 miles to Winston-Salem.
- Take the Waughtown Street exit, turning right onto Waughtown Street.
- Go through the traffic circle and the school is in the next block.
Parking
Parking on campus is limited until approximately 3 pm on Friday because classes and rehearsal schedules. Visitors to campus may park in any of several designated visitors’ parking spaces near the Administration Building on Ehle Drive, in the School of Filmmaking visitor lot, and behind the Hanes Student Commons. Otherwise, visitors may park in non-reserved parking spaces around the campus. We will provide temporary parking permits with registration packets.
Parking for persons with disabilities is available directly in front of the music building along Ehle Drive; a valid permit is required.

We will schedule limited free shuttle bus service from two neighboring hotels. Parking on the weekend will be less problematic, but carpooling or shuttles are encouraged.
Lodging
We have reserved blocks of rooms with special rates at several conveniently located hotels and motels. Mention the name “Southeast Horn Workshop” when placing your reservation. None of the hotels are within walking distance. Rates do not include applicable taxes and incidental charges.
There are many other hotel motels in Winston-Salem, the following have been selected based on distance and preferable rates.
