Competitions
Each participant may compete in no more than three of the competitions: the high school or college solo competition, high horn and low horn mock orchestral auditions, and the quartet competition.
Participants must use original parts and scores. Photocopies are only permitted to facilitate page turns or other performance problems, provided the original publication is present.
Registration fees are $10 for each competition. Fees must be paid by each member of the quartet competition.
High School Solo Competition
Eligibility: Participants must be enrolled in a high school or home-schooled, born on or after June 1, 1987, and may not have performed professionally under full-time contract, or have been previously offered such employment by virtue of winning a full-time professional audition. Registration must be received by March 10 to enter the high school solo competition.
- This competition will have one round, unless the adjudicators deem a second round to be necessary. If necessary, the same music will be performed in the second round.
- Competitors may bring an accompanist or use a staff accompanist. The fee for using a staff accompanist will be $15, payable with registration.
- The winner will perform the prepared solo at the final concert on Sunday, April 2 at 1:00, pending approval of the adjudication panel.
- Each competitor must prepare one work selected from the following list.

College Solo Competition
Eligibility: Participants must be full-time college or university students born on or after June 1, 1978 and may not have performed professionally under full-time contract, or have been previously offered such employment by virtue of winning a full-time professional audition. Registration must be received by March 10 to enter the college solo competition.
- This competition will have 2 rounds.
- Second round competitors may bring an accompanist or use a staff accompanist. The fee for using a staff accompanist will be $15, payable in cash upon advancement to the second round.
- The winner will perform the prepared second-round solo at the final concert on Sunday, April 2 at 1:00.
- Each competitor must prepare one work for each round, selected from the following lists.
Round One Repertoire
- Malcolm Arnold. Fantasy.
- Bernhard Krol. Laudatio.
- Otto Ketting. Intrada.
- Sigurd Berge. Horn-Lokk.
- Douglas Hill. Jazz Set. Any single movement.
Note: Because of the number of competitors, each person will be limited to 3 minutes and 30 seconds in the competition room during the first round only. Competitors will determine their own cuts prior to the competition. The judges do not need to be informed of your cuts. The timer will begin when you enter the room. You may begin your piece at any appropriate section of the music to facilitate a presentation that you feel shows off your best work. You may make cuts within the music as well. You will be cut off after 3 and a half minutes without penalty, even if you have not finished your selection.

- Play first horn parts for all excerpts, unless otherwise noted.

Quartet Competition
Eligibility: All four hornists must be full-time students enrolled in the same university or high school and may not have performed professionally under full-time contract, or have been previously offered such employment by virtue of winning a full-time professional audition. High school students who all study with the same private teacher may compete in a quartet even if they do not all attend the same school. No single person can enter the quartet competition twice, i.e. as a member of two different quartets. Registration must be received by March 10 to enter the quartet competition.
- This competition will have one round, unless the adjudicators deem a second round to be necessary. If necessary, the same music will be performed in the second round.
- The winning quartet will perform at the final concert on Sunday, April 2 at 1:00.
Repertoire
Quartets may perform any piece or selected movements from the quartet repertoire. An original copy of the score must be provided for the adjudication panel. Selections should be ten minutes or less in duration.
